In May 2018, in collaboration with PRS Foundation, we sponsored a Flash Funding to give emerging artists the chance to press 500 12" vinyl to assist in progressing their music career. Annabel Allum was one of the recipients of this prize at the event. A year later, we catch up with solo artist Annabel to update our readers on how the funding was valuable to her.
Flash Funding addresses issues facing emerging music creators by responding to specific needs with an innovative approach to funding, involving video submissions, quick turnaround and high-profile industry experts and partners. The Flash Fund for Vinyl is launched on April 23rd, with a deadline of Tuesday 30th April at 11:59pm. Artists wanting to apply should head to https://prsfoundation.com/flashfunding/
"Receiving the PRS flash funding for vinyl was such a big moment for me! It has always been my dream to put my tracks to wax, and the grant made this possible. I still feel extremely lucky, and love being able to show them off at the merch table after shows." Annabel Allum
This is what Annabel's manager Rob Lynch had to say about the Flash Funding:
Were you happy with the product/service received?
Yes, the finished product looks fantastic, and the service was extremely smooth and problem free!
How did you use the vinyl?
We used it in a number of ways. It was sold at the merch booth at shows, it was distributed to shops, we set up a Music Glue profile to sell online.
Did the vinyl and the revenues from selling the vinyl help you with your career development?
We coincided the release of the vinyl with Annabel's debut UK headline tour, so the revenues from the vinyl helped to fund day-to-day life on the road, and since then sales online have been put towards building a budget for new recordings.
How did fans respond to the vinyl release?
The response from fans has been great. It's Annabel's first proper physical release and features her two previously (digitally) released EPs, so fans have been really eager to get their hands on a tangible product.
Would you recommend other bands to participate in PRS Flash Funding?
Absolutely. It's an incredible bit of support to receive. We wouldn't have been able to finance a vinyl release ourselves, so we feel really lucky to have been given the opportunity to do so. There's something special about an artist getting their music pressed on vinyl for the first time.
What have you been up lately?
Annabel has just come back from SXSW where she play a successful set at the BBC Music showcase. She has some support shows coming up with Sleeper and then heads to the mainland for some shows in Belgium and Holland ahead of a performance at The Great Escape. There will be new music being released soon and a summer full of festivals.
Join us again this year at The Great Escape for another Flash Funding Live Panel with Julie Weir (Music For Nations/Sony), Jamz Supernova (Presenter, BBC Radio 1Xtra), Anton Newcombe (Artist, The Brian Jonestown Massacre), David Bianchi (CEO, Various Artists Management), Claire Alliot (A&R Manager, Stellar Song Publishing / TW9 Management) and Chaired by Joe Frankland (Senior Grants & Programmes Manager, PRS Foundation).
